$102.46

That's how much we paid yesterday to fill up our gas tank. It took two credit cards, since the pump cuts off at $60. Am I the only one who thinks this is crazy? Am I the only one who thinks this is somehow connected to the record profits the oil companies have been posting for the past several years? Am I the only one who thinks having a "former" oil man in the White House whose cronies all benefit from high gas prices and a Congress whose members are all among the country's super-rich is leading the country down a path that will inevitably crush the middle class while swelling the ranks of self-serving billionaires? Am I the only one who thinks that an electoral system that requires candidates to spend millions and millions of dollars--for which they must pander to special interests (read: oil and pharmaceutical companies)--just to compete is not the best way to ensure a government that serves the interests of the people, instead of corporations?

Really--am I?

wow... I thought $60 a tank was awful. You have a suburban?

That is insane! You are definitely not the only one who thinks that. Even though I would have to cross two busy roads to get to work, I am getting into decent enough shape to ride my bike to the school. Seriously.

Not alone are you- what to do, what to do- You're a former diplomat- I'll follow you!

Don't feel bad. I am the only one who thinks we're past peak oil production, on the decline, lucky to have even a gallon to our names, and incredibly stupid to not be dumping billions into renewable.

You are definitely not the only one! But who do we complain to---it seems they're all in it together to keep their pockets fat while we all struggle just to get by. And it doesn't end with the gas. Anyone notice how each item at the grocery store, even the discount ones, is $3-4? It's going to have to end somewhere, because when no one can get to work or buy food, there will be riots in the streets!

I just feel sad and helpless about the whole thing! I was driving around doing errands today and needed gas. When I saw the price was $3.76/gallon I just couldn't force myself to pull in, and went home with an almost empty tank!

It's disgusting and shameful, and I pray that some day soon, someone decides to get to the bottom of it. I heard on the news today that even the oil companies are saying there is no reason for the price to be more than $50/barrel right now! Something fishy is going on!

Okay, I'm done ranting and have removed my soap box from your comment page....sorry! :/

Um...no. You aren't. And I totally agree with what you were saying the other day (your husband's thoughts), but it's just too depressing to contemplate right now. So I just keep my head down, don't read the news, try to ignore the prices, work my behind off and count down to election day. And do some campaign work, of course. :sigh: 273 days left.

I don't know how much it has to do with a particular shrub or not. We pay $7 a gallon here, and that's cheap for Europe.

Well, right now I am off to vote in the primary for a candidate that doesn't accept $$ from special interest groups and isn't feeding at the trough of corporate America, and I am hoping beyond hope that after today that candidate will have made enough of a statement that there will be no doubt any longer about who our nominee is...

My husband owns the FedEx route here in our town and he spends over $200 a week on DIESEL! Remember when Diesel used to be cheaper then regular?

Also, everyone's so freaked out about gas prices that no one seems to've noticed that grocery prices rose 30% last year! In ONE year!

I also blame that hike on gas prices. You gotta ship most of that food here and there and that takes.... gas.

It is quite interesting (and appalling) that an antiquated and unnecessary electoral college has so shaped the path our country has taken in the last four years. I thought the first 4 years were quite sufficient for GWB. Can't wait for it to end.Let the computers count individual votes and let the people speak! Then maybe we wouldn't need our President to be going to the Middle East to beg for more oil so the prices can come down a little so he doesn't look quite so bad to everyone standing in line at the pumps.

No, you are not alone. But we better start speaking up -- loudly! -- or we are just gonna get more of the same.

[whispering] Maybe you need a smaller car? [/whisper]

Ouch!

No, it certainly isn't just you. I keep thinking of that movie "Network", where Howard Beale tells everybody to open their windows and yell "I'm mad as hell and I'm not going to take it anymore!"

It isn't too late to do something like that at the grass roots level as a nation to put a halt the madness--unfortunately, our culture is so full of inane distractions (such as the latest electronic gadget or "Dancing with the Stars", my pet peeve) that folks don't notice they are being made slaves to foreign oil or the production of Viagra. God, I'd better quit before I turn into Bill Maher.

No, no, no, no and really no.

The problem will only get worse as long as gas/oil companies remain private entities with shareholders to enrich.

(Yikes, I didn't even know I had an inner socialist!)

No, you;re not the only one. My job is transferring to a different city which will increase my commute from 11 miles one way to 50 miles one way. I figure I will spend between $400-$500 a month just in gas.

It tuns my stomach at how greedy the oil companies are and how hard they are making life for everyone.

No. Not by a long shot are you the only one who thinks this way. The last fill-up of our Camry was just over $50. A knitting friend in Vermont paid $3.69/gallon the last time she filled up with home heating oil.

But I'm not getting on my soapbox; you've said all that I'd say. Thanks for saying it.
