Although it's not something I talk about here, I love to read. I have been reading obsessively for as long as I can remember. As a kid, I had a deal with the local librarian. The library allowed a person to check out ten books at a time. But I only got to go to the library once a week, and ten books wasn't enough. So she gave me a brown paper grocery bag and told me I could check out as many books as would fit in the bag, as long as I could carry it. I filled that bag up every week.
My childhood friends shared my love for reading. We would "play" every day after school. More often than not, our play took the form of flopping on the floor and reading, side by side. When we weren't reading, we were writing our own stories and reading them to each other. I had exhausted the elementary school library before I reached sixth grade.
In high school, I spent a year in Germany as a foreign exchange student. I didn't speak a word of German before I arrived, but left completely fluent--largely because of the hours and hours I spent discovering all the great German literature that my new language abilities opened for me.
My first college degree is in literature. I started with English and German, but quickly added Russian to the mix. I worked at a software company when I wasn't in class, and I spent nearly every spare penny at Harvard Book Store and Schoenhof's Foreign Books. Graduate school, law school, and extensive travel only added to the mix.
All of this reading and book collecting has led to a house stuffed full of books. I have bookcases in nearly every room, and all of them are overflowing. I have books in baskets under my bed and books in piles in the closet. I have books in the bathrooms and the kitchen. When I had kids, I started buying children's books in earnest. And since the kids are turning out to be nearly as voracious in their reading habits as their mother, you can imagine how the collection has grown in twelve years.

I will always love "real" books. I love the way they feel, I love the way they smell, I love they way they wear with time and reading. I won't be getting rid of my hard copy library. But being able to take it all with me, everywhere I go, in one little device--how can you beat that?

YAY for Kindle! LOL I got one in March and *love* it! SO many books are available free and I can finally read some of the classics that I've always wanted to! I don't know what I did before this silly thing! LOL
Oh ~ that is Way Cool!!
I have been resisting the Kindle, but I certainly hear you about only having to bring one simple and lightweight device on a trip. My iPod replaced CDs and cassettes in the same way.
So jealous!!!
Oh I am crazy envious! I have books everywhere and I keep some stashed in my car as well for the off chance I have 5 minutes to kill. Great gift!
I broke down and bought a Kindle two weeks ago and I'm also in love! You can get some great classics here for free: http://tinyurl.com/freekindlestorebooks
My mom got one of the first gens when they came out and I thank the book gods for it. She reads books like breathing air (a habit I also have but I read much slower then her) so its been one of the best purchases she's ever made. Enjoy it! And happy belated birthday!
DH loves his kindle; he says it's the coolest thing ever. His favorite bit of tech, way better than laptop, ipod, any of that stuff.
I know all about spending a lot of money at the Harvard Bookstore! But I noticed that since I started knitting (in March) I'm reading much less, and I'm a little bit worried about it. I'm hoping that at some point I'll be able to read while knitting...? I hate having to decide between reading and knitting... How do you do it?
Liest du immernoch auf deutsch?
My sister and brother each have a kindle and they are happy with them. The kindle is suppose to be one of the hot picks for the holidays this year.
And the LA Times has a story about a student's kindle eating his homework (& George Orwell book) at this url:

I too held my breath and waited for the 2nd generation to come out proclaiming it would be my b-day present. Then a friend told me a few weeks ago the scrolling needed for each page was a real PITA. I've moved my kindle request to the X-mas list until I gather more info from users I "know". What do you think? Is the scrolling a bother for you?
Have you tried any web browsing? I hear even ravelry can be accessed. WOW all my books AND knitting patterns. :o)
I see these on the train all the time. I read like crazy but if I had to buy my books to read on a Kindle I wouldn't be able to afford yarn! But all the features are making me drool!
What a great gift! I downloaded the amazon/kindle app for my new iPhone (bought yesterday which I LOVE). I remember laying out on my best friend's lawn and we were both reading The Shining by Stephen King. I still like to hang out with people and just read, not talk.
Best.thing.ever!!!!
I got mine for my B'day in June. I took it to the hotel in August, finished one book, then 'shopped' for another one from the pool chair! It was awesome!!!!
Enjoy!!!!!
with your recommendation, it's now on my November birthday list!
