Help!

Stop me before I sew again!

Or at least before I buy any more sewing machines.

It's just so hard to pass up an awesome deal on such a sweet little machine. I mean, seriously! $20? So this is my sweet Brother Galaxie 221--solid metal, built in cams for decorative stitches, and bright yellow!

And this case! Come on--it's yellow with turquoise flowers! Vintage perfect.

It looks like it's never been used. Clean as could be, inside and out.

I just love this. I don't know why it tickles my fancy so much. I think after sewing on the old machines with their complete lack of directions about anything, it's just funny how this manufacturer totally dummed-down the process.

These guides are everywhere. Probably a good thing, actually, since it didn't come with a manual and my online attempts to locate one --or any information at all about this machine--have utterly failed. I guess I'll be winging it with this machine...once I figure out where I'm going to put it. It is possible to have a sewing machine stash?

Of course it's possible - you've got one! A sewing machine stash, that is. I must say it's a unique sort of collection. The yellow would've been hard for me to pass up, too, I admit. Have fun!

Love it! Have fun sewing and figuring it out!

Yes, it is possible to have a sewing machine stash and I think you've got a healthy one started! :)

But it certainly is adorable, I would have snagged it too.

I think special shelves to showcase the collection. A collection is somehow more rational then a stash. I love that there's a "darn" setting---for when you get frustrated? You're making me appreciate my '69 Singer so much more. [Ahem. Hands off.]

Of course you can have a sewing machine stash! It just might take up a bit more room than a yarn stash.

I have two sewing machines so far...and one is tiny!

She's a beauty! If you buy one more you'll be able to open up your own sewing machine museum.
I'll bet they do a better job at sewing than today's machines.

That is super sweet! I don't know if I could have resisted!

Did you ever happy to find any information on your Galaxie? Or be willing to pass along any information you figured out... one lovely shiny yellow hunk of metal just fell into my lap today, and it seems to be a bit more of a mystery machine that many others out there.

Yarnhog said...

Yes, Rin, as a matter of fact, I did! I was able to get a manual for it. Blogger won't give me your email, so if this gets to you, let me know and I'll email you a copy. :)

I'm wondering where you came across the manual. I have searched and have not been able to find one. I'd appreciate any info you can offer. Thanks!

Came across your blog while researching sewing machines and looked up my Galaxie 221 out of curiosity. I got mine in 1972 for my HS graduation present and after 39 1/2 years of LOVING it, it is finally dying and I need to replace it and I am BUMMED!! I have the manual - will be happy to copy it after Christmas and send it to whoever wants it, but need to ask for the cost of the copying and mailing.

I just picked up one of these darling machines today... sadly mine comes in a cabinet not with such a spiffy case like yours.

I'm use to the much older machines (you know, treadle power!) but there is something so charming about this machine, I'm in love.

Having trouble hunting down a manual, did you ever find one?

TrampledbyGeese said...

Oh, I should have kept reading before I commented.

If you still have the manual, I would love a copy. itissunny @ shaw . ca

Thank you kindly.

Hello! I'm not sure if you even get comments from posts this long ago, but I was also wondering if you would mind emailing me a copy of the galaxie 221 manual! I'm a 20-year-old new to sewing.. I can't even thread this machine! I thought for $20, I could learn to sew on this machine, but it's really not going well. My email is allison.linn236 @ topper dot wku dot edu. Thanks so much!! I just found this post. If you are still willing to send out a manual that would be fabulous.

When I was in college I borrowed my mother's sewing machine to make a halloween costume, but she wanted it back. My Granny had two of these yellow Brother 221's and gave me one of them. I don't use it much and pretty much have to reteach myself all the settings when I break it out every few years. I can guarantee it hasn't been cleaned or oiled in 25 years so this manual will be very helpful.

Hi - I have been sewing on a brother 221A for a very long time. I bought it new in the 60's or 70's. I would be happy to copy my manual and email a pdf file (no charge) to you. I'm responding to an old post so you probably have already found a manual, but just in case .... Judy

This looks just like the Brother model Opus 191 my daughter just bought but her case was pink. I have not been able to find a manual online. Could you please email me a copy? We are trying to figure out what all the knobs do. The knob that changes the specialty stitches does not move. We are hoping the manual can shed some light.
Thanks so much.

I need a manual for a Brother Galaxie 221 too, please. And if anyone has any thoughts on whether or not I've got a good machine or not. I'm trying to replace another old machine that isn't made anymore. I sew on Sunbrella, tapestry, cheater crazy quilts, other tailoring work too... so I don't want new pieces of crap machines I've seen available out there. I'm not a virgin seamstress. Lol.
