Love is a Battlefield--But Why?

For those of you not in California (and I know that is most of you), last year, the California Supreme Court declared that denying same-sex couples the right to marry is a violation of the California Constitution and ordered that same-sex couples be allowed to legally marry. Thousands of couples did so. Immediately, conservative groups mobilized to launch a voter initiative to declare such marriages illegal. The campaign was misleading and confusing, and many voters voted "Yes" believing they were voting to protect same-sex marriage, when in fact, a "Yes" vote meant exactly the opposite. Prop 8, as it is called, passed, making same-sex marriage illegal once again, and leaving thousands of legally-married, same-sex couples in a bizarre and heart-breaking position. Prop 8 is now being challenged for constitutionality before the California Supreme Court. If it is found to be constitutional, legally-married same-sex couples will be legally divorced against their will.

Why when America's constitution keeps state and church apart, do the church interfere so much? The USA is clearly run from a religious point of view. Laws such as this are a case in point. For us to be married legally is a pure secular thing and a right. We have the right to be protected just the same as str8 couples do. Rights of tenancy and inheritance etc are a right, I believe. Treating us the same as everyone else will not turn anyone gay but might make some hetero people appear human.

On a lighter note, I loved the dance sequence in the bar in the video of the song your post title refers to.

What is the matter with people? Why are they so afraid of same sex couples? Why is the right wing Christian conservative so judgmental and hateful? Politics/religion, its enough to make me sick sometimes. I don't know why same sex couples shouldn't be as miserable as the rest of us... heh! Seriously though, I hope Prop 8 is found unconstitutional. Times are changing! Yes we can!

My brother worked for the Obama campaign in L.A., so election day was so bittersweet for him and his husband*. He is still really shaken by the whole situation and feels really angry, which I don't blame him for...

*they married weeks before the election in anticipation of this event.

I do not understand this, not even a little bit, when we changed the law in Canada so that same sex couples had full rights, including the right to get married, there was some back-lash (including from our current conservative government which is just one of the reasons they will never achieve a majority) but the law continues to stand. At this point, it's a non-issue it's just part of the constitution. As one of our leaders once said "The government has no place in the bedrooms of the nation" Good luck reversing prop8.

Yeah, I just don't get it. I was very sad when I heard about it on election day, as it was one the Canadian news was following.

Count me amongst those who don't understand why certain people feel so threatened by same sex marriage. Nobody has been able to explain to me what dire consequence would arise from people of the same sex marrying each other. Maybe I'm just dense, but excuses like "Blasphemy against the sanctity of marriage" just don't cover it for me. I have a pair of brothers-in-law (yes, they married and are now in that married?not? limbo) who live in CA. I have lesbian friends here in NC who can't marry. I've never understood why it was a government issue. If a church's doctrine forbid it, fine. Don't marry in a church. But the gov't meddling in this just irks the hell out of me.

I am with everyone else. I don't get it. There is nothing to fear in allowing same sex marriages. Everyone should have the right to marry no matter what. That is a great video.

I hope your Supreme Court realizes that love and marriage are a basic human right, not to be denied by the government. I too am baffled by the fear and hate that some groups bear towards those different than themselves.

These things make me crazy in a big way. I think so many people worry too much about what other people are doing - they should leave well enough alone so that we all have a chance to be happy with the course our lives are leading.

Yeah, this really sucks! And, I agree with Knitman on this. There IS no separation of church and state in the U.S. So, you can be a Catholic and get elected, you can be a philanderer and get elected, you can be a black man and get elected, a woman almost got elected, but could a gay person be elected? I'll betcha not. And I'll bet anyone who publicly let it be known they were agnostic or atheist couldn't be elected, either.

It's criminal to tear these folks apart.

Like I said, THIS SUCKS!

Wrokplace security won't let me watch the video. Arrgghh. I was in CA on election day and I had to ask a couple times whether a vote yes meant you were supporting same-sex marriage or were against. Confusing indeed and I was crushed when the vote came down.
This is the civil rights issue of our time.
